Michael Goldschmidt serves as the Assistant Director of Security at the Port of Long Beach, California. In this role, he oversees a team of more than 100 public safety professionals, including both uniformed and support personnel, working to ensure the safety and commercial efficiency of the nation’s second-busiest port. Mr. Goldschmidt leads the Port’s technical and cybersecurity infrastructure, manages a security budget and grant portfolio totaling over $50 million, and serves as a liaison to numerous federal, state, and local agencies involved in regional security operations.

Mr. Goldschmidt began his service with the City of Long Beach in July 2017 as the Administrative Officer for the Department of Development Services, where he directed all hiring, labor relations, and workforce development efforts. He later served as the Interim Manager of Administration for the Long Beach Fire Department, overseeing the department’s $128 million budget and managing all personnel-related matters for more than 400 firefighters and support staff.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Goldschmidt was appointed Director of the City of Long Beach Emergency Operations Center, where he coordinated citywide testing, vaccination, food distribution, and other critical relief efforts. He also spearheaded the Port of Long Beach’s Mariner Vaccination Program, which delivered COVID-19 vaccinations to more than 11,000 international ship crew members.

Before joining the City of Long Beach, Mr. Goldschmidt served for over 20 years as an officer in the United States Coast Guard. He began his military career in 1997 aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton out of San Pedro, California, and completed Naval Flight Training in 2000. He went on to serve in aviation units in Corpus Christi, TX, and Miami, FL, conducting search and rescue missions, counter-narcotics operations, and disaster response for hurricanes including Katrina and Rita.

Later, he served as Director of Operations at Coast Guard Air Station Washington, D.C., coordinating global executive transportation for the Secretary of Homeland Security and various congressional delegations. As Military Aide to the 24th Commandant of the Coast Guard, Mr. Goldschmidt managed complex logistical, administrative, and diplomatic protocol for the Commandant’s global travel and engagements.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Goldschmidt graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Government. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in 2012.
